2014 SAG Awards Fashion

This weekend was the SAG Awards! I like this show because it's all actors and all about the acting. No fillers with best sound or best make up. There was some AWESOME fashion but with all the choices I was able to quickly narrow it down to a few of favourites.

Amy Adams and Anna Gunn looked beautiful in blue!

Also some glamour via Isla Fisher and Katrina Bowden. LOVE these dresses, not to mention the styling and hair!

2014 Oscar Challenge

Bright and early this morning the Oscar nominations were announced, and at that I am pleased to announce I will be embarking on my 2nd annual Oscar challenge! Same as last year, what I will be trying to do is to watch all the movies nominated for Best Picture before the awards show and throw in my two cents on who I think should win. I had a lot of fun doing it although I didn't QUITE see them all.

This year I am already in good shape having seen 3 of the 9 - and the show isn't until March 2nd so I've got plenty of time! The nominees for Best Picture are:

2014 Oscars, Oscars, Academy Awards, Best Picture, Movies

So far with the ones I've seen I would be more than happy with Captain Phillips or Her winning. Both EXCELLENT movies. I feel like I'm going to stand alone when I say I don't think American Hustle should win. It won the Golden Globe and I just don't think it was deserving, especially in the company the other films. Anyway, more on specific reviews later...

Have you seen any or most? Any strong opinions or hunches so far?

Last Night's Golden Globe (Fashion) Winners

Last night was the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards. This time I actually watched ALL of the red carpet coverage and ALL of the awards show! I've got to say, I will give credit to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler but this show felt modern and really really funny. They've given it some much needed spunk for sure!
Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Golden Globes, awards show

With the actual awards I was quite happy with the winners. Jennifer Lawrence was INCREDIBLE in American Hustle. Amy Adams was great as well. As far as the gentleman winners, I realize I NEED to see Dallas Buyers Club. I think the only thing I was a little sad about was that American Hustle won the best Motion Picture award. Although the ladies were fabulous in it, I didn't think that movie was all it had been cracked up to be. It felt long, dry, and drawn out at times - not something you would necessarily expect from a critically acclaimed flick with that cast. In my limited exposure to the nominees I would have given it to Her. THAT was a beautiful perfect movie in my opinion... but more on that in a later post.

As for the fashion - I was so pleasantly surprised! SO MANY dresses to choose from. I was definitely impressed and found the task of picking a fave difficult.

My top picks are newbie Margot Robbie in this absolutely stunning Gucci dress with beautiful emerald shoes to coordinate, and host Amy Poehler (doing a quick red carpet circuit before hitting up the stage) in a simple but interesting black gown. I would gladly wear either!

Runners up with stunning looks that are worth mentioning and showing off: the colourful gowns of Lupita Nyong'o and Louise Roe, and metallic beauties Kate Beckinsale and Kate Mara.

And can we please take a moment to admire the beautifully dressed pregnant celebs Kerry Washington and Olivia Wilde? STUNNING!

2013 American Music Awards

Happy Monday!

Last night was the American Music Awards. I totally missed the show due to watching football - which by the way was an AMAZING game if you happened to catch it - but as usual I was online early this morning checking out what looks walked the red carpet! It was an easy selection for me. Taylor Swift, who as I have said is not my fave person in the world, seems to be popping up on my lists lately, and last night was no exception. She looked amazing. Amazing amazing. Also, one of my absolute faves, Nicole Richie looked fab in her white dress. No matter the season whites always seem to make my list too... just something about them - classic and clean maybe?

2013 CMA Awards

Easy picks for me last night with the 2013 CMA Awards fashion! The two belles of the ball in my opinion were Carrie Underwood (I'm not sure she can do any wrong in my eyes... and that hair!!!), and Kellie Pickler. Both dresses have some glitz and interesting elements and are accessorized simply which is perfection.

Then, with slightly less "typical" formal looks (but in my opinion more wearable) there's Jana Kramer in a modest black top with a stunning water colour skirt, and Rachel Smith in a super elegant lace gown. Love these.

2013 Emmy Awards Fashion

Last night was the Emmy Awards! Before the show I tuned into the Red Carpet special and really loved all the fashion I was seeing. It was a good year for fashion. I also watched the first bit of the show (and rather enjoyed it - I love NPH) until I had to click away for the Dexter series finale... can you believe it's over?!?!?! Anyway, back to the Emmy's - from what I saw there were so many surprises when it came down to the award winners. Neil Patrick Harris said it well when he said "No one in America is winning their Emmy office pool". When it came to the fashion how ever, the only surprises I encountered were how many of the dresses I fell in love with! Very few disasters to be seen on the red carpet - Heidi Klum being the only one I can think of at the moment. There were some repeat style winners though like Allison Williams and Carrie Underwood, who always seem to rock something I love, but also some unexpected newbies to make my list like Christine Baranski and Anna Gunn. Here are my 8 faves (yes, eight, I had to share them all!) :

2013 MTV VMAs

Last night was the MTV VMAs. As is the story with most awards shows I did not watch it. This morning I did check out a couple videos to do with some of the highlights... like what on earth was Miley doing?!?!?!

Anyway, this post is of course about the fashion! I love any MTV awards because of how fun and free the fashion is. It really was all over the place this year but I seemed especially drawn to anything classic, elegant, with a sexy twist. From there my top 3 were easy to choose:

MTV, VMAs, Selena GomezNaya Rivera, MTV, VMAsTaylor Swift, MTV, VMAs

It doesn't get more classic than navy and black, it doesn't get more elegant than gowns, and it doesn't get more sexy than Selena's revealing panel, Naya's cutouts, and Taylor's plunging top. I love all three of these looks. Selena Gomez has been wowing a lot in looks like this lately and I must say I'm rather impressed with how she doesn't go overboard or make it tasteless. Naya Rivera has always done subtle sexiness so well. And Taylor Swift, I've said it before that I'm not much of a fan, but I love this departure from her regular style.

Looks from Last Night: CMT Music Awards

Last night was the CMT Awards and this morning I went through the fashion and was really only awestruck by two (very different) outfits! Don't get me wrong there was a lot of nice fashion, along with the typical misses, but only two makes my topped my list.

First we have Carrie Underwood in an Edition by Georges Chakra short suit that I need immediately for a night on the town with my ladies! To me it's just one big YES. Next is Kellie Pickler in a gown so it's more formal but with the sparkle and low cut halter top - it screams "party". I don't even know where I would ever be able to wear it but it's pretty great. In addition to their outfits, both ladies are styled so simply and well.

MTV Movie Awards

I normally catch some of, if not all, of the MTV awards shows. I just find them more fun, funny, and laid back. There's also usually SOMETHING that happens that people are talking about the next day. I couldn't last night though but I tried to catch the replay as I was drifting of to sleep... but there was no drift, just immediate sleep. When the live show aired I noticed the Twitterverse lighting up saying that Rebel Wilson (of Bridesmaids fame) was doing a great job as host. That's kind of what I wanted to check out - how she'd be outside of that cult hit movie.

Anyway, on to the red carpet analysis, I didn't find much that caught my eye. You had everything from formal gowns, to basic shift dresses, to suits, to whatever the heck Ke$ha was wearing - I wasn't too impressed. I was a little confused too! Normally the fashion for this kind of thing is a little more fun. Oh well! I had two standouts - both stunning in white - and also both on the more formal end of the spectrum. Those standouts are: Jordana Brewster (flashback!) and Kylie Jenner. Both rocked their white ensembles!

Basically it looks like I picked 2 versions of the same outfit as my top two - but I didn't have a lot to work with!

One outfit did have me stumped though - Kerry Washington in Michael Kors. Do I love it? Do I hate it? Best dressed? Worst dressed? I don't know!!! I love the colour combo, no doubt about it. I love the black silhouette. I love the pop of yellow. But the train, do I love the train? Maybe it should have been wider and less like a table runner. Some online articles are calling it a mullet dress (clever) but even they are not saying yay or nay. Anyway, I'm torn (obviously). What do you think?

ACM Awards

Last night was the Academy of Country Music Awards. I definitely like country music but it's not something I listen to often or follow, so it wouldn't really make too much sense for me to watch the awards show. I know the biggie country stars but most, I might not have a clue! Of course that doesn't stop me from eying the fashion. Carrie Underwood in her floral Naeem Khan gown came out on top for me. It's not a dress typical of my usual taste but there's just something about it that I loved! Also on top, I though Jewel came out looking absolutely stunning. I was going to post a few of my favourites but I decided to stop with these two ladies as they looked gorgeous and were my clear favourites.

Funny Friday: Oscars & Jennifer Lawrence

To cap of this week following the Oscars, I thought I'd share some funny things not just having to do with the Oscars, but also having to do with Jennifer Lawrence. I have said it a million times (or twice) and I will say it again: prior to seeing Silver Linings Playbook I really didn't like her much but now - after the movie, seeing interviews and her awards show flubs - I'm kinda loving her!

The first thing I want to share is a photo The Platform (best known for personalities such as P'Trique) posted on Facebook yesterday, with the caption "Who else thinks this should be an actual ad in the next issue of Vogue? Tumbling is SO chic right now."

Jennifer Lawrence, Dior, Oscars, funny
Here are a couple of Jennifer Lawrence videos that have been making their rounds on the internet this week. The first, her hilarious press speech after winning her Oscar:

And when she met Jack Nicholson for the first time after he crashed her ABC interview...

Have a fabulous weekend!

2013 Oscar Fashion Standouts

Last night was the Oscars. And what a show it was. Seth MacFarlane of Family Guy fame hosted and although I woke up this morning to see mixed reviews on his hosting, I personally think he did a great job. That is part of the reason I stayed up and watched the entire show! One of my most favourite things about last night was when a winner ran over in their acceptance speech, the Jaws theme music would play. That idea HAD to have come from Seth, and it was just perfect.

Next, my guess for best picture was wrong. I went all in for Les Misérables winning, but it was Argo that came out on top. Although I still stand by my choice, I am totally fine with Argo winning as it really was a fantastic movie. After seeing the acceptance speeches last night, I was very happy Ben Affleck. He put in a lot of work and made a great movie. Last note about the awards show itself, there was a 50 year James Bond tribute! I am a Bond fanatic and was very much looking forward to it. Although the tribute was nice it wasn't what I'd hoped. Super short and more about the music than the movies. What was also a bit sad was that there were so many rumours leading up to the show that all 6 Bonds would appear together on stage for the first time. Didn't happen. But we got a lovely highlight real of the movies and a killer performance of Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey!

Now, moving on to the fashion! This was a good show for fashion. Nothing crazy or innovative compared to the previous awards shows this season, but good nonetheless. I had many favourites but my top two are: Jennifer Aniston in Valentino and Amanda Seyfried in Alexander McQueen.

It was hard to narrow down the runners up but here are the stars who also made my list:

Oscar Challenge Recap

Just under one month ago I set out to complete an Oscar Challenge. The challenge was to watch all 9 movies that are nominated for Best Picture prior to the show. I did not quite make it through all 9 but I did see 6 of them which I've got to say, I'm quite pleased with! I suppose there is still a chance I could see one or two more before the show on Sunday night, but I highly doubt it. I saw: Silver Linings Playbook, Les Misérables, Django Unchained, Beast of the Southern Wild, Zero Dark Thirty and Argo. Each one of these movies was good in their own way but I must say, after seeing Les Misérables, I felt like it was winner. I still feel that way. It's not that it was the best of the lot, because they are all VERY different movies (and this one is 100% musical, not one word spoken, so you have to like that), it's just that it was incredibly well done and affected me long after it was over. It was excellent. That being said, if Django won I would fully understand. It also impressed me.

Oscars, movies,
Did you see any? Any predictions?

For my brief review of each movie, scroll on down, but I want to first share another "Funny Friday" video that is quite topical. I'm pretty sure it's hilarious if you've not seen Les Misérables but if you have, all the better!

Let the Reviews Begin! (in the order I saw them)

Silver Linings Playbook - Great movie. Good, strong, unique story and incredible acting. Prior to this movie I was not a Jennifer Lawrence fan, but I became one after seeing this. Although I really liked it, and can't point out any flaw, I don't feel like it will/should win Best Picture.

Les Misérables - After this was finished, I found my self consumed with what I just saw and was sure, even though I'd not finished my challenge, that this would win best picture. I still believe that. You have to like musicals to enjoy this as there is zero talking, but I love musicals and this musical happens to be my favourite. The movie did not disappoint.

Django Unchained - Another great flick. You do have to like Tarintino in order to enjoy this movie, and if you do, you will love it too! Typical of his work you are constantly visually stimulated by his creativity, and you feel like he has shown you the world as he imagines it. As for the story, it is thought provoking and riveting. To compare it to one of his previous films, I would definitely say Inglorious Bastards style as opposed to a Kill Bill. If this won best picture I would not be surprised or disappointed.

Beasts of the Southern Wild - This movie was definitely more on the artistic side. It's not one that I would necessarily recommend but that's mostly because I don't think it would appeal to a broad audience. You'd have to like a certain kind of movie AND be in a certain kind of mood I think. The first half was VERY artsy, but I really enjoyed the story in the second half.

Zero Dark Thirty - Very tough subject matter detailing the events that followed 9/11 but it was an exceptional movie that was very tastefully done. Jessica Chastain is nominated for her role in this and I was blown away by her performance. I'm thinking she might win.

Argo - As everyone probably knows, this movie is based on a true story. I knew that going in but was not really familiar with the story itself. I thought it was riveting. I also found myself fully engaged and at the edge of my seat the whole time! It was really well told and the acting was superb. I had heard from a couple of people who saw it in the theatre that it was a little long (as in they could have cut out at least 20 minutes by editing it a bit better) but I didn`t really feel that way - likely because I was watching it from the comfort of my own couch! :)
